Understanding Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs):
Cleaner Air Through Advanced Filtration
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) play a crucial role in reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines. At HJS Emission Technology SA, we are committed to delivering world-class filtration solutions that protect both human health and the environment.
What Are Diesel Particulate Filters?
DPFs are emission control devices engineered to capture and remove diesel particulates – tiny particles of soot released from diesel engine exhaust. These filters are highly efficient, with filtration rates often exceeding 90%, and are built to withstand extreme thermal and mechanical conditions.
As the most effective technology for reducing diesel particulate emissions by mass and particle count, DPFs are essential for meeting environmental and occupational health standards.
How Do DPFs Work?
Diesel Particulate Filters focus on capturing the solid fraction of particulate matter – primarily soot and black smoke. However, to address non-solid fractions of particulate emissions, DPF systems are often paired with additional technologies like oxidation catalysts, and the use of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) is recommended to minimize sulfate particulates.
Diesel Particulate Trap vs. Diesel Particulate Filter
While older sources may use the term “diesel particulate trap” to describe various types of particle separation systems, DPFs specifically use filtration mechanisms to capture particulate matter. Other methods, such as centrifugal separation or electrostatic attraction, are generally ineffective due to the extremely fine and lightweight nature of diesel soot particles.
Collection and Regeneration
Because diesel soot has a very low bulk density (under 0.1 g/cm³), DPFs can accumulate large volumes of soot quickly. For instance, a heavy-duty vehicle engine might collect several liters of soot in a single day. To maintain optimal engine performance and prevent exhaust pressure buildup, DPF systems require regeneration – a cleaning process that either occurs continuously or at set intervals. This process clears the trapped soot without interrupting vehicle operation.
Our Solution: The HJS SMF® (Sintered Metal Filter) System
At HJS Emission Technology SA, we supply and install the Sintered Metal Filter (SMF®)- a leading-edge diesel particulate filter system developed and manufactured by HJS in Germany.
SMF® systems achieve over 99% soot and fine particulate filtration efficiency, making them one of the most reliable choices in the global market. With decades of experience in exhaust gas after-treatment, HJS has pioneered robust solutions that meet the rigorous demands of mining, construction, and industrial applications.
