New Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) Exposure Legislation
HJS SA Offers Mining-Ready Compliance Solutions
In a significant step forward for occupational health and safety in South African mining, the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has introduced new amendments to the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), setting legally enforceable limits on airborne pollutants, including Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM). These changes, published in the Government Gazette, come into effect on 26 June 2025, and mark the first time DPM – specifically elemental carbon, classified as a carcinogen – has been included in the MHSA’s exposure limit tables. The new occupational exposure limit is 0.1 mg/m³, demanding urgent attention from mine operations across the country. Click to see the full legislation paper here.
A Challenge to Compliance—And an Opportunity for Change
For many mining operations, particularly those running diesel-powered fleets underground, meeting this new standard will require significant changes in both emission control technology and operational protocols. That’s where HJS Emission Technology SA comes in.
